William J. Knust, 91, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 4 with his wife and daughter at his side, at St. Johnland Nursing Center in Kings Park, NY. William lived in Smithtown since his high school years, where he met his loving wife of 67 years, Erma. He was a graduate of Smithtown Branch High School, New York Ave, Smithtown, class of 1944. William was the first of three boys and served in the military during the last year of WWII, after which he attended Pennsylvania Military College, now Widener University. He graduated with a BS degree in electrical engineering and was employed for 39 years by Long Island Lighting Company, before retiring from his management position in 1988. William had two children, Patricia Ann and William John, Jr. He is predeceased by his son William, granddaughter Jenny, and his brother, Joseph. William is survived by his wife Erma, brother Charles, daughter Patricia, grandson Keith, and great-grandson, Charlie. He also is survived by many nieces and nephews who meant so much to him throughout his life. William was a kind, faithful and gentle man, devoted to his family, and loved and respected by all who had the pleasure of knowing him... The family thanks all who gave their time and care to him these last few years especially...He will be greatly missed.
