Vera Gerardi

Our mom’s life began shortly before the war
broke out in Europe. Her stories of having to
go to the bomb shelter in the middle of the
night and hope that the buzz bombs didn’t
stop making noise as it signaled the dropping
from the sky. Not seeing her father for many
years from being away fighting for the
British army, made for an unrecognizable
father due to his absence. Her courageous
spirit wanting to experience the U.S. at the
age of 20 with a secretarial pool bound for
Long Island proved fateful as she met and
married our Dad and settled in Wading
River, NY. Her interests through the years
included quilting, charity work with the local
hospital, orphanage and library. She was a
voracious reader, and enjoyed playing
solitaire on the computer, and working
crossword puzzles with a pen. Taking writing
courses at community college proved to be a

thrill as she was published in the news review
of Riverhead as the sole student to do so one
year. Travel was not only her vocation but
something she enjoyed tremendously. Her
familiarization trips included countless
European countries, Egypt and white water
rafting in Banff Canada. Taking pride in
watching her four grandchildren (Jack,
Paige, Allison and Jeffrey) grow up to be
truly amazing people was always something
she cared deeply about. She is survived by
her daughter, Laura (John) in Winston Salem
NC, and Glenn (Michelle) Commack NY.
