Estelle Gouras

May 29, 1931 ~ June 11, 2016
Estelle was born in Brooklyn in 1931 to immigrant parents from Greece. In 1933 the family moved to Port Jefferson, NY, where her father James Stergakos was partners with his brother in law Charles Koutrakis at the Elks Restaurant in Port Jefferson.
Estelle grew up in Port Jefferson, graduating from Port Jefferson High School and went to work in People’s National Bank in Patchogue. She was the first Sunday school teacher for St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church in Blue Point, NY, where she was active and met her husband James Gouras.
They were married in 1956 and bought a home in Smithtown at which time Estelle worked at Tinker Bank in East Setauket. She held various positions from teller, manager of the bookkeeping department, to finally vice president of the bank. She later became a full time mother to two daughters, Tina and Diana, while working with her husband Jim in the fur shop, Gouras Furs of Smithtown. They retired in 1988 and enjoyed traveling and spending time with their grandchildren.
Estelle was the beloved wife of James. Cherished mother of Tina (Greg) Babigian and Diana (Greg) Torigian and the adored grandmother of Christopher, Stephanie and Nickolas. Dear daughter of the late James and Evangeline Stergakos. Loving sister of the late John Stergakos. She also belonged to several organizations including Daughters of Penelope (Order of AHEPHA), Eastern Stars (Masons) and Smithtown Historical Society. Donations may be made in Estelle’s name to either Narcolepsy Network, 46 Union Drive #A212, North Kingstown, RI 02852 or St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church, 77 Montauk Highway, Blue Point, NY 11715.
Dear Jimmy, Tina, Diana and family,
My deepest condolences on the loss of your beloved wife, mother and grandmother. I have fond memories of the last time we saw each other, back in November for the Clytie Chapter anniversary celebration. I am thankful for the friendship she had with my mom and the bond we shared as Sisters in Theta Pi.
May her memory be eternal and may peace be with all of you.
Love,
Domna Zachary
