Dorothy Gloria Matthews (née Swanson), affectionately known as “Dot”, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on Saturday, October 28, 2023, surrounded by loved ones, in Saint Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown, New York. Born July 26, 1934 in Mineola, she grew up and raised her family in Long Island with her beloved husband John Paul Matthews. She is survived by a long list of people who loved her, including, but not limited to: her husband; their six children: Cathy (Robert) McCleery, Judy Gruber, Clifton (Lesa) Matthews, Donald Matthews, Edward (Lisa) Matthews, and Paul (Patrice) Matthews; eleven grandchildren: Kimberly, Valerie, Rob, David, Kyle, Sarah, John, Cullen, Donovan, Jillian and Megan; and great-grandson Nico. She is preceded in death by her dear brother Edward Swanson and her son-in-law Edward Gruber. A faithful Nazarene, Dorothy was very active in her church, leading Women’s Bible Studies and participating in numerous community activities, especially those involving children. Her love and energy seemed boundless. She was a lover of camping, scenic family vacations, marathon shopping expeditions, practical jokes and gag gifts. She will always be remembered for her faith, kindness and generosity, as well her sense of humor and sharp wit.     Our hearts are broken in the loss of your wonderful mother and Grandmother. She was one of the sweetest and kindest people I’ve known. I loved her dearly. Will not forget her smiling face and her cute saying of “My Heavens” when she was surprised at something. My sincere condolences also to Dad and all the siblings, Ed, Paul, Cliff, Don and Cathy. She was a lovely, classy lady and I will remember her fondly.
